8. Stop smoking (or avoid starting):
Tobacco has no direct influence on diabetes. It is, however, a recognized risk factor for vascular disorders. People with diabetes who smoke significantly increase their risk of developing severe macro-vascular complications, which can lead to stroke, myocardial infarction or lower limb arteritis. If the diabetes factor cannot be removed, it is possible to eliminate the smoking factor by being helped to quit smoking.
