During a stressful situation, the body reacts by secreting stress hormones, catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline), cortisol, glucagon and growth hormone. These stress hormones have the effect of raising blood glucose levels in order to provide the body with the energy it needs to act physically (escape or fight) on the stressor.

However, in people with diabetes (and especially those with poor diabetes control), the rise in blood glucose can persist if the available insulin is insufficient or absent. The effect of stress on blood sugar can vary from person to person. Thus, stress can have a hyperglycemic, hypoglycemic effect or, in some cases, not affect blood sugar levels.
