Let peaches, apricots, nectarines, and plums ripen at room temperature, and do not refrigerate. If you cannot eat them immediately, place them in the fruit tray of the refrigerator for a few more days.

The avocado is a perfect example to illustrate what we are saying. This stone fruit doesn’t start to ripen until it is picked from the avocado tree. If you buy a hard as stone avocado, don’t store it in your refrigeration machine because it will slow down the ripening process.

However, if you have a perfectly ripe avocado but you don’t think it will be eaten immediately, putting it in a cold temperature can be beneficial to you by extending the duration of use (before it becomes too ripe).

In short, it is best to keep the hard and unripe avocados on your kitchen counter and store the ripe avocados in your fridge if you are not going to eat them right away.

Foods that can be preserved by cold but which will LOSE quality.

The following food products can be refrigerated, especially if you have a problem with insects or other infestations. The quality of these foods will be reduced, but can usually be repaired by heating. But if you throw away the food because it is infested, losing some quality by storing it in a refrigerator is only a small price to pay.
