Hepatology is the study of the liver, while “hepat-” and “hepatic-” mean “of the liver” or “belonging to the liver.” The most common term containing this prefix is hepatitis.

Here’s “-itis” again, I hope you remember her now. It is inflammation of the liver. There are 3 most common types of this inflammation, types A, B, and C, which we all should be vaccinated for.

There’s also non-viral hepatitis, which can be caused by chemicals and autoimmune hepatitis (when the immune system attacks the liver.) Another famous one is alcoholic hepatitis due to drinking too much alcohol.

All of these can damage the liver, either temporarily or permanently, as well they can result in liver failure, liver cancer, and you guessed it, death.
