Enemy no. 1: Smoking

As soon as you light a cigarette, you produce carbon monoxide; this gas destabilizes the oxygen that travels on the red blood cells and thus limits their ability to transport it. In addition, nicotine and other chemicals increase blood pressure: blood vessels narrow, heart rate accelerates and blood thickens, coagulates more easily.

Other components of tobacco smoke damage the walls of the vessels so that cholesterol deposits and other materials build up. As these lesions become more severe, they become more fragmented and give rise to clots. Clotting obstructs the irrigation of the heart. This results in a heart attack or myocardial infarction (MI).

The conclusion is clear: if you smoke, the most important thing you can do to improve the health of your heart is to stop.
