If you love chocolate and suffer from heartburn at the same time, then it’s absolutely essential to know about the possible link between acid reflux and eating chocolate.

Besides caffeine content, chocolate can also be a heartburn food trigger itself. It is another food that relaxes the sphincter, making stomach acids flow back into the esophagus. Just pack up all of your chocolate and hand it over to your gastroenterologist for safekeeping if you have heartburn.

If you are sure that chocolate triggers heartburn, you should never eat it less than three hours before bedtime or napping since gravity can lead acidic digestive juices to move into the esophagus as you’re lying down, resulting in that unbearable bitter sensation.
