This parasitic illness is believed to be transmitted via the bite of an infected female sandfly.The latter requires a proteinaceous bloodmeal from a living thing in order to develop her eggs. What happens is that the fly deposits parasites within the saliva into the skin upon biting.

The parasites on the other hand multiply and cause a destruction at the level of tissues with disfiguring consequences in most of the times. Known as Aleppo Evil, Cutaneous leishmaniasis was more commonly found in Syria.
