Bairnsdale ulcer has been known for decades but its prevalence in the country is growing, especially, in the last three years with parts of Queensland and Victoria becoming hot spots. The latter has recorded 45 cases during the last year.

Many people are at risk of catching this gnawing and terrorizing flesh-eating disease and doctors aren’t sure where it comes from or what causes it. According to some Epidemiologists, they believe that this disease is spread to humans via mosquito on possums.However, they still unsure if the possums are the cause or something else.

At the very beginning it started out as a normal mosquito bite but four months later it spreads to become painful hole wounds in the skin that will develop and start eating the flesh, fat, tendon, nerves and even the bones. Usually, the most targeted areas are the elbow, back, calf, and ankle.

The good news, this aggressive disease is easily curable if caught and treated early. If not, it can cause unbearable pain where many sufferers are left with extreme scarring and even possible amputation.
