Not all chemotherapeutic agents cause nausea and vomiting. Each has different effects, but nausea and vomiting are more likely to occur when chemotherapeutic agents are combined.

Nausea and vomiting may occur within the first few hours after administration of chemotherapeutic agents and usually last about 24 hours. However, these effects may be delayed and persist for a few days.

In some people, anticipatory nausea may occur after a few sessions, they are nauseated even before the drug is administered because they expect to be sick. The care team can help you reduce nausea and vomiting by prescribing antiemetics and giving you advice on how to take these medications to make them more effective.
