Hair loss (alopecia) is a common side effect of many chemotherapeutic agents, but not all of them. Hair follicles are sensitive to these agents since they grow rapidly. It is impossible to predict the duration and extent of hair loss, depending on the type and dose of medication administered and personal factors.

Hair loss can occur on all parts of the body, including the face and scalp (hair). It may start a few days or 2 to 3 weeks after the first dose of chemotherapy is given. Hair usually grows after completion of treatment.

It is often recommended not to stretch, stiffen or color the hair during treatment. Wait until your hair grows back to its original state before using strong products. This may take 6 months or more after treatment. Check with your health care team to see when it will be possible to re-use these products.
