Many viral infections affect people of all ages, but often their frequency appears to increase in children. Most childhood viral infections are not serious and include various diseases such as colds with sore throats, vomiting and diarrhea, and fever accompanied by a rash.

Some viral diseases causing a more serious disease, such as measles, are now infrequent due to large-scale vaccination. Several types of viral infections that can be contracted by children are discussed in the chapter on viral infections in adults (General information on viral infections).

Most children with viral infection recover without treatment, and very often the infection is so characteristic that the doctor can diagnose it only by observing the symptoms. Generally, it does not use laboratory tests to identify the virus in question.
