This is the main cause of acquired heart disease in children and adolescents in the Third World. The prophylactic treatment of rheumatic carditis led to a marked decrease in the frequency of severe valvulopathies, which gradually developed during relapses and recurrences.
The existence of new, more virulent serotypes and more precise epidemiological studies has led to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease and a reassessment of primary and secondary prevention recommendations for RAA.
