The most common cause of irregular heartbeat in children is respiratory arrhythmia. This is a normal feature of the child’s cardiac function, resulting in an acceleration of the heart rate at inhalation and a slowing down at exhalation. This phenomenon concerns a young child, in perfect health, without any embarrassment to the effort and often sportive.

Conversely, the child can spontaneously describe “failures” of his heart. These symptoms are a source of an unpleasant or anguishing sensation that can sometimes be described as a pain of the heart by the child. This is usually an extrasystolia. The heart has an “excess” beat, not felt, then a short pause followed by a stronger beat (this felt and embarrassing).
