Cardiac malformations are due to an abnormality in the “manufacture” of the heart, during the first weeks of pregnancy. These malformations occur between the third and eighth week of pregnancy when, from a primary heart tube, the heart constitutes its four cavities and its four valves.

Nine times out of ten, it is impossible to determine the cause of these malformations. For the remaining cases, it may be either a hereditary cause or an abnormality of the chromosomes, or an infection, or intoxication (addiction, smoking, alcoholism, etc.)

The prevention of cardiac malformations requires the vigilance of the woman likely to be pregnant or in early pregnancy confirmed.

It must then:

– Ensure immunization against infectious diseases likely to cause birth defects, in particular, rubella.
– Proscribing tobacco, alcohol and other drugs,
– Take a medical opinion and remain very cautious for any medication.
