The heart murmur is a noise that the heart makes by pumping blood. This is a distinct noise, which exceeds in intensity the normal sound of the audible heart to the doctor’s stethoscope. Heart murmurs can be heard in up to 40 percent of children, especially around the age of three or four.

The heart murmur is not necessarily a sign of a heart defect. In most cases, doctors hear blasts in children with normal, healthy hearts. A small percentage of heart murmurs is associated with heart disease. They are then called organic or pathological breaths.

Pediatric cardiologists are able to distinguish the innocent breath from the organic breath according to the characteristics of the breath and by diagnostic tests such as electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, and radiography.
