You need to avoid salty goodies and generally reduce the salt in your diet so you can help lower blood pressure and keep your kidneys safe. In fact, simply not salting the food on your plate might not be enough.

Processed foods are the ultimate source of salt in Americans’ diets. Avoid such foods and use only fresh ingredients whenever possible. Also, to add flavor, try using spices and herbs instead of salt while cooking.

Furthermore, adults aged 51 and older as well as anyone with diabetes, high blood pressure, or chronic kidney disease should consult their doctor about reducing their sodium intake. Generally, those with diabetes should consume less than 2,300 mg a day (but your doctor may recommend lower amounts.)
