Smallpox is an incredibly contagious and horrific-looking disease. The common, obvious symptom is pox, fluid-loaded pustules covering the body. However, this infectious disease isn’t limited to the skin and can affect the mouth and throat.

Smallpox is actually a quite ancient disease that dates back to 10,000 BC, collecting 300 million lives only since 1800. Unfortunately, most survivors suffer other acute complications such as blindness.

In the most serious form of smallpox, there is no blistering of the skin but rather bleeding under the skin, turning it into black and causing death in less than a week. The good news, however, is that smallpox has been completely eradicated since 1976.
