Everyone knows that flu is a quite unpleasant illness which most people suffer from about 2 to 3 times in a lifetime. Yet, you probably don’t know that influenza caused one of the most devastating pandemics in history.

In less than a couple of years, the Spanish Flu was responsible for the death of up to 100 million people. Surprisingly, most of them were young and healthy. The particular type of flu strain (H1N1) actually succeeded in turning the immune system of a healthy body on itself, generating a “cytokine storm” which invaded the lungs.

The most recent flu attack was Swine influenza, which was found to be a new form of the H1N1 strain. Many people died indeed, but it wasn’t as bad as the Spanish Flu. The main reason why you should fear this infectious disease is its ability to mutate and evolve to create new strains.
