During REM (Rapid eye movement) sleep, the brain takes a break from bodily control. In fact, our breathing, body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and some other bodily functions become random when we enter REM sleep.
This means the brain loses control a bit and the body compensates for the lack of regulation as much as necessary.
