Iron accumulation in your stomach and the rest of your internal organs may gradually lead to liver and brain damage. You must seek treatment once you notice the early signs of hemochromatosis to dispose of the excess iron that has been absorbed by your organs including your stomach.
If your body has already absorbed too much iron, avoiding iron supplements simply won’t be enough, so you might need iron overload treatment such as dietary changes, iron chelation therapy, or therapeutic phlebotomy, in which red blood cells are removed from your body to reduce the level of iron.
Those were the early signs of iron poisoning that might otherwise go unnoticed by you.
If you have hemochromatosis you should stop taking iron supplements, vitamin C and multivitamin supplements and avoid eating too much red meat, foods with high vitamin A and vitamin C as they boost iron absorption, and iron-fortified foods like whole-wheat bread, spinach, lentils, and beans, etc.
