Did you know that our mouth contains millions of germs? It might sound scary, but it’s true! And most of these germs transfer to your toothbrush. This means that if you don’t care properly for your toothbrush, you’ll just be transferring these germs from your mouth to the toothbrush and from the toothbrush to your mouth.
Now, of course, that these germs aren’t directly related to any disease, and they won’t cause any serious health problems, but if you can disinfect your toothbrush and get rid of these germs, why wouldn’t you do it?
Here we give you 6 tips on how to keep your toothbrush clean in order to have a safe oral hygiene routine.
1. Washing your hands is important
The first way on how to protect your toothbrush from germs is washing your hands! Before and after washing your teeth or even touching your toothbrush is always important to wash your hands with regular soap for 15 to 20 seconds. Our hands are the main way that viruses and bacteria are transmitted to other people or objects. This means that when you wash your hands before touching something, you’re “killing” whatever germ you might have on your hands so it won’t transfer to more objects. If you always have a fresh manicure or big nails, don’t forget to clean underneath your fingernails as well. It might look pretty from the top, but once you look underneath, you’ll find a lot of accumulated dirt.
2. Washing your toothbrush
When it comes to washing your toothbrush, we all are used to slightly wet it first before we use it, but what about after you use it? Do you also wet it a bit to remove extra toothpaste left in there or do you simply throw it into the cabinet or drawer? Both of these options are completely wrong. In order to have a clean toothbrush, you must carefully wash it before and after you wash your teeth. Not only to remove leftover toothpaste but also plaque debris and food particles that it might contain.
