#3 – Foot Exam

Diabetes can slow down the circulation in your legs and feet, causing you to lose feeling there. According to the American Diabetes Association, you should get a foot exam every year.

Your doctor will examine your legs and feet for open wounds, sores, cracks, or redness, as well as for strange problems (such as overlapping toes).

Then, you’ll get a monofilament test, in which you’ll close your eyes and the doctor will simply press a piece of nylon to different areas on your foot. If you can’t feel the pressings, you may have nerve damage.

Your doctor may also tap on your Achilles tendon to check if the nerves on the back of your ankle are in good condition. If your foot points downward automatically, then they are healthy.

But don’t wait for an annual exam to check your feet’s health. It is recommended to check them every day at home. Also, it is helpful to wear well-fitted shoes and socks that absorb moisture.
