High blood pressure and high blood sugar can have a negative impact on your eyes’ tiny blood vessels, but you can prevent the damage if your doctor detects it early. The best way to do that is getting an annual dilated eye exam.

Your ophthalmologist will examine the inside of your eyes for any signs of leaky blood vessels using a type of eyedrops that enlarge your pupils for a short period of time. This test isn’t painless, but you won’t be able to see clearly for a few hours afterward.

Neglecting your eye health may lead to a type of diabetic retinopathy called macular edema, which causes the leaky blood vessels that lead to blurred vision and swelling.

In case this condition was so advanced, the doctor would easily see the bleeding in the retina without having to use the dilating technique. It’s very important to get a yearly dilated eye test to prevent eye damage.
