A diet that consists of red meat, shellfish, sugary soda, and alcohol is a diet that is high in purines – which is a health risk in many ways. This type of diet, however, can increase the risk of gout, because purines, if ingested in excess, will be broken down into uric acid.
The more purines you eat, the higher your uric acid levels will get, and if your body is not able to eliminate uric acid through urination, it puts you at a higher risk of suffering from gout.
Like we mentioned before, gout was the disease of kings because only royalty could afford these foods – nowadays, it is a disease that can affect pretty much everyone.
