When people think about a tasty breakfast, pancakes are probably the first thing that comes to mind. But are pancakes (and waffles) healthy? Well, that actually depends on the recipe. The most traditional (and flavorsome) recipes contain flour, eggs, butter, sugar, and milk. After the pancakes are done, they are often eaten with syrup topping. That’s a real problem. Let’s say you eat two of these. You’re consuming more than 500 calories and getting close to none nutritional value, making them one of the worst breakfast foods. However, there’s a way around this.

This recipe, for example, is very simple, vegetarian-friendly, and will provide you much more nutrients. Whole-wheat flour will help you reach the recommended daily amount of fiber while containing a variety of vitamins (B-1, B-3, B-5, riboflavin, and folate, for example). Topping it with non-fat yogurt and fruits like berries or banana make you introduce fruit to your breakfast, which is always a great idea. And, in the end, you’ll be ingesting only 100 calories if you eat two.
