Thin, red lines under your fingernails are a sign of splinter hemorrhages: tiny blood clots that run vertically under the nails. This can be caused by a lot of different conditions such as psoriasis, fungal infection, or trauma to the nail.
On some rare occasions, blood clots under the nails are a sign of a heart infection known as endocarditis. This is a very serious and potentially fatal condition that affects the inner surface of the heart. Small areas of bleeding into the skin is often one of its first noticeable symptoms.
If you have an existing heart condition and notice splinter hemorrhages on your nails (and haven’t experienced trauma to the nail), you should seek medical attention to understand its cause.
Other symptoms include fever, tiredness, heart murmur, and low blood cell count. To get a sense of how dangerous endocarditis can be, know that the risk of death among those infected is
roughly 25%.
