Even though it might be a good idea to cook for a whole week instead of cooking every day, most leftover food is not healthy and shouldn’t be reheated for next day’s meal. The main reason for it has to do with possible food poisoning, which is caused by bacteria that food gains overtime. While some food can last about two days in the freezer, other types of food shouldn’t even be consumed 5 hours later, let alone 24 or 48 hours. So how many times can you reheat food? The Food Standards Agency says only one time, but still, there are some items you should not reheat. Keep reading to find out what exactly are the leftover foods that can make you sick.

1. Rice

The number one food on this list is rice, which may surprise a lot of people. After all, rice is one of the most consumed foods out there, so it’s very likely you eat a lot of rice leftovers. Even though rice is considered to be healthy food, back in the seventies, a lot of food poisoning outbreaks in China were associated with fried rice from restaurants that were found to contain Bacillus cercus. This microorganism ends up multiplying when in normal temperatures. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t store rice in the freezer, don’t leave it at room temperature for too long.

2. Buffet food

Again, food will only remain bacteria-free if kept hot or cold. Buffet food, even though it’s kept in hot trays, the temperature is still not hot enough to kill all the microbes. This is why you should always be careful about the food you eat at a buffet. We know it’s tempting to go to these types of restaurants, after all, you’re paying the same you would pay at a restaurant, except you can eat whatever you want. But make sure you’re going to a trustworthy place with high-quality food, and whenever you see the employee placing new food on the trays, run to it!

3. Eggs

Even though eggs taste way better when fresh, a lot of people still reheat scrambled eggs, or other foods containing eggs. In case you didn’t know, 90% of eggs contain salmonella, which is a bacteria that can cause a lot of symptoms related to food poisonings like fever, nausea, diarrhea, and cramps. Besides this, normally eggs are cooked in a short amount of time, so, commonly, the bacteria remains on the egg when you eat it, but it’s in small amounts, so there’s no real problem there. But leaving eggs at room temperature is a recipe for disaster because you’ll be letting bacteria to multiply and have a bigger impact on your health. Also, eggs take 2 minutes to cook, so don’t be lazy!
