3. Using the wrong toothbrush / keeping it for too long

Just because a hard toothbrush gives you a feeling of firmness and effectiveness during the brushing process it does not mean that it is the best option for your teeth. Actually, dental experts recommend the exact opposite: a toothbrush with soft bristles that won’t cause enamel wear. If you want to buy an electric toothbrush, make sure you choose a model approved by the American Dental Association.

The question is: how often should you change your toothbrush? Well… it depends, but as a general rule, you should replace your toothbrush every three months, depending on how soon the brush bristles become frayed.

However, you should also change your brush when you are sick so that you don’t catch the disease later on for a second time. Depending on the type of sickness, the virus or bacteria can spread to the toothbrush and survive long enough to become dangerous again after you recover.

4. Ignoring bad breath

Bad breath is perfectly normal as it is often caused by the presence of bacteria in your mouth. However, if you can’t freshen your breath by simply brushing your teeth, something might be wrong. Potential causes of chronic bad breath include gum disease, dry mouth, yeast infection, or even more serious diseases such as liver or kidney problems and some forms of cancer. Needless to say, you have to schedule a dentist appointment to be properly examined.

5. Drinking after brushing

Many people like drinking their tea in bed before going to sleep. But even something as light and safe as tea can damage your teeth overnight. That is why you should always fall asleep with that fresh toothpaste flavor in your mouth.
