#1 – Hemoglobin A1c Test:

Hemoglobin A1c Test© Spring Daily

Hemoglobin is a protein that is found inside each red blood cell. Hemoglobin also carries glucose because glucose can adhere to all kinds of proteins in the body. Glucose remains fixed to hemoglobin throughout the lifetime of the red blood cell, about 3 to 4 months. The more glucose in the blood, the more glucose that adheres to the hemoglobin.

The HbA1c test indicates the amount of glucose that has adhered to the hemoglobin. The result of this assay informs you and your healthcare team about your average blood sugar in the last 3 to 4 months.

If your blood glucose level has been high for a few months, the HbA1c level will be high. Talk to your healthcare team about your daily blood glucose testing AND the HbA1c test results.
