Beans are probably the most famous gas-causing food in the world. In fact, they contain a high amount of raffinose, a complex sugar that the body can’t digest easily.

This complex sugar travels through the small intestines into the large intestines where it’s broken down by bacteria, generating hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane gas.

But you can reduce gas without eliminating beans completely. Just soak them overnight before cooking or use ‘Beano’, an over-the-counter product that was shown to be effective in reducing gas for some people.

Milk, cheese, ice cream, and almost all other dairy products consist of lactose, a sugar that’s naturally found in milk. Individuals who can’t produce the necessary amount of the enzyme lactase find it difficult to digest lactose, this is called lactose intolerance.
