The act of drink water is essential for life, but there is no exact amount that should be ingested per day because each individual has his own metabolism and practices different activities.

The ideal amount of water to drink varies from person to person according to his age, gender, weight, height, health problems, physical activity and season (in warmer weather it is natural greater perspiration leading to higher fluid intake).

However, the most accurate way of knowing the ideal amount of water each person really needs – and the one that brings the greatest consensus of the international medical and scientific community – should be calculated according to each person’s weight.

A healthy adult needs about 35 ml of water per day for every kilogram of body weight. For example, a person who weighs50 kilograms needs to drink 1.7 liters of water per day, while an 80-kilogram individual needs 2.8 liters of water. The central idea is the higher a person’s weight, the greater their need to drink water.

However, drinking too much water should also be avoided because drinking too much water is as bad as not drinking enough water. The recommended daily amount reflects the amount of water your kidneys and heart can process.
